Patterns compared

Eight shift patterns, side by side.

Six patterns cover 24/7 and average 40 to 42 hours a week. Two 4×10 schedules cover daytime only, for teams that don't need around-the-clock staffing. What changes is how long the stretches are, when weekends fall, and who works nights.

12 h · 4 teams · 28-day cycle

DuPont

Rotates days and nights with a full seven days off each cycle. Great for recovery, harder on the stretches of four nights in a row.

12 h · 4 teams · 14-day cycle

Pitman (2-2-3)

Works 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, then repeats inverted, so everyone gets every other weekend off. Teams stay on fixed days or fixed nights.

12 h · 4 teams · 28-day cycle

Panama

The same 2-2-3 rhythm as Pitman, but teams switch between days and nights every two weeks, so nobody is on permanent nights.

12 h · 4 teams · 8-day cycle

4-on, 4-off

Four shifts, then four days off. Easy to remember, but days off slide across the calendar, so weekends aren't predictable.

8 h · 4 teams · 28-day cycle

Southern Swing

Covers three 8-hour shifts by rotating days, swings, and nights a week at a time. Suits teams that prefer shorter shifts.

10 h · 6 crews · weekly cycle

10-hour, 24/7

Three 10-hour shifts overlap by 2 hours, so every handoff has built-in time. Crews work four days on, and Wednesdays run double-staffed.

10 h · 2 crews · daytime, 7 days

4×10, seven days

Two crews each work four 10-hour days to cover daytime every day. They overlap on Wednesday, a natural day for training or team meetings.

10 h · 2 crews · Mon–Fri

4×10, weekdays

Two crews cover 10 hours a day, Monday to Friday, and everyone gets a three-day weekend. Tuesday to Thursday run double-staffed.

How to choose

Three questions settle most rotations.

There's no single best 24/7 schedule. Start with what your team will actually stick with, then check the coverage math.

8, 10, or 12-hour shifts?

12-hour shifts mean fewer handoffs and more days off. 10-hour shifts overlap, which builds handover time into every change. 8-hour shifts mean shorter days but three handoffs every 24 hours.

Fixed or rotating nights?

Fixed nights (Pitman) suit people who prefer them. Rotating nights (Panama, DuPont) share the load across the whole team.

Long breaks or predictable weekends?

DuPont gives a full week off each month. Pitman and Panama give every other weekend. 4-on-4-off gives neither on a fixed day.

Do you need 24/7 at all?

If nights are quiet, a 4×10 schedule can cover weekdays or 7-day daytime with fewer people, plus an on-call rotation for after hours.

FAQ

Shift pattern questions, answered.

What is a DuPont shift schedule?

A 28-day, 12-hour rotation for four teams: 4 nights, 3 off, 3 days, 1 off, 3 nights, 3 off, 4 days, then 7 days off. It averages 42 hours a week.

What is the Pitman schedule?

A 14-day, 12-hour rotation, also called 2-2-3: 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off. Two teams cover days and two cover nights, and each gets every other weekend off.

What's the difference between Pitman and Panama?

Both use the 2-2-3 rhythm, and the names are often used interchangeably. In the generator, Pitman keeps teams on fixed days or nights, while Panama switches them between days and nights every two weeks.

How many people do I need for 24/7 coverage?

The 12-hour and 8-hour patterns need four people per seat to cover 168 hours a week. The 10-hour pattern uses six, because its shifts overlap. Plan extra headcount on top for time off, sick days, and training.

Can I export the rotation?

Yes. Download the calendar as a CSV with the date, team, shift, and hours for every day, then open it in Excel or Google Sheets.

Can Octofi run a pattern that isn't listed here?

Yes. Octofi runs any repeating rotation, including custom cycle lengths, mixed shift lengths, and a different time zone for each shift.

How do 10-hour shifts work for 24/7 coverage?

Three 10-hour shifts cover 30 hours a day, so each handoff overlaps by 2 hours. With crews working four days on, it takes six crews to cover every shift, every day.

What if we don't need 24/7 coverage?

Use a 4×10 schedule. Two crews can cover 10 hours a day on weekdays or all seven days, and each person still works 40 hours a week.
